These activities included increasing corporate and foundation support for faculty endowments and student scholarships, building and improving facilities, cultivating sponsored research, and developing student and alumni programs.

In November 2007, Meacham assumed the role of interim director of development and in August 2008 was named director of development, providing leadership for the college’s fundraising and donor-relations efforts. In this role, he worked closely with individual donors, corporations, and foundations to build philanthropic relationships with the college.

In September 2018, Meacham was named the college's chief advancement officer, and in April 2019 the Assistant Dean of Advancement.  Vernon oversees the development, alumni relations, and communications and marketing efforts for the college. The advancement team works to increase engagement and philanthropic support for the college and Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Prior to his time at Virginia Tech, Meacham worked in agribusiness as an animal nutritionist and as an executive in the fertilizer industry, working with organic-based fertilizer technology and manufacturing operations.

A native of Blacksburg, Meacham earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s degree in animal nutrition from Virginia Tech. He currently serves on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Alumni Organization Board and the VALOR Advisory Board and has served on the Alpha Gama Rho fraternity’s Alumni Board.
