Description

Worldwide impact of biotechnology applied to plants, animals, and microorganisms. Concepts, scientific and ethical issues, and public concerns related to genetic engineering. Safety and release of genetically engineered organisms; bioremediation; cloning; transgenic plants, animals, and microbes.

Syllabus

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss principles of recombinant DNA technology.
  • Describe and provide examples of animal, plant, and microbial biotechnology.
  • Articulate and present different opinions on the impact of biotechnology on agriculture, industry, medicine, and the environment.
  • Critique media presentations involving biotechnology.

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Two semesters each of college biology and chemistry will provide students with some understanding of and appreciation for concepts and methodologies in science generally and genetic engineering in particular.
