Supporting Your Student Through the Mid-Semester Blues
We understand that many of our students can be stressed and homesick during this time of the semester. We have found that receiving a little encouragement from home goes a long way. Below are some suggestions and advice from veteran college parents in the CALS Academic Programs Office.
Providing Words of Encouragement
- Balance: reminding your student to do something they love each day
- Prepare: encouraging your student to plan ahead and start asking their professors about upcoming assignments and exams
- Breathe: assuring your student that everything will be okay
- Positivity: ending conversations with your student on a positive note
Actions of Love
- Listen to your student when they are stressed and offer support when asked (ex: talk through their schedule, studying, and planning).
- Send a small care package or a gift certificate to their favorite place.
- Send a text message of encouragement before a big assignment or exam.
- Ask your student what they need to feel comfortable.
Just remember to keep it simple and let your student lead the conversation. Before you know it, they will be home for Thanksgiving break!
