A Special Note From...
Dear CALS Families,
The Student Success Center offers free academic support to students of all levels who want to do their best in their classes. Our program areas include Scholar Support (for students already receiving the PCEG or PSI scholarships), the Black Male Excellence Network, and Academic Services, which includes tutoring, peer academic coaching, a Seminar Series on Student Success, and academic success courses.
Why use our academic services? The Student Success Center has supported student learning for over 20 years. Our tutoring program is certified at the highest possible level by the College Reading and Learning Association, recognizing our excellence in tutoring practices and training. Our new location, on the second floor of Gilbert Place, offers beautiful study areas and private appointment rooms. We believe in helping students build the skills to succeed in their coursework on their own. Sometimes a friendly peer’s fresh perspective helps everything click. Our peer educators have successfully completed the courses they support here at Virginia Tech, and they are ready to share their tips for success.
One common misconception is that tutoring and coaching are only for students in serious academic trouble. That’s not the case at all! Our services exist to help all students meet their goals, whether that’s passing a class, reinforcing some tricky concepts, or ensuring that A. Getting academic support does not mean a student has failed—it means they care about doing better.
Here are some academic services to explore:
- Individual peer tutoring in over 100 courses (see course list here)
- Weekly drop-in tutoring, no appointment needed
- Individual peer coaching on time management, study skills, overcoming procrastination, and more
- Over 30 student-presented seminars to build academic skills
Scheduling information is available on our website: www.studentsuccess.vt.edu
We look forward to supporting your student’s academic success!
Sincerely,
Amber Z. Smith
