Guillian Hernandez

Pursuing his PhD in Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology and Weed Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

“My love for science comes from my fascination of the world we live in... what draws me in the most is the idea of being able to provide food for people even without knowing them directly, knowing that I'm playing a role in food security for a growing population.”

During his undergraduate program, Guillian was introduced to the world of molecular biology, specifically working with DNA barcoding of the Lotus genus and it was then that he started to gain interest in plants as research organisms. His interest in research is to understand and manipulate plants in a way that helps increase their productivity now and in the future. Guillian believes that it is important to understand abiotic stressors for plants as future times will require more resilient plants and understanding what that means for each plant under a specific stressor is important.

Guillian earned a B.S. Industrial Biotechnology and completed both a minor in Plant Biosecurity and a certification in Biochemistry from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. He is pursuing his PhD in Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology and Weed Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
